They symbolize to the world that although a person has past away, the bearer will never forget them. Whether it be a mother, father , child or friend, it is a persons way of saying their loved one will always be with them. A person who gets a tattoo to commemorate the life of another is not someone who is just going whit the current trend of getting ink. They are looking for a permanent life long way to remember those dear to them.
