Republican presidential candidate John McCain has called for a top-level inquiry into the economic crisis, claiming that a corrupt and excessive Wall Street had betrayed American workers. His Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, continued to criticise Mr McCain's comment that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong". In a television ad Mr Obama's campaign asks: "How can John McCain fix our economy if he doesn't understand it's broken?"
